Making Money Your

App Store Classics: Game Dev Story, a game about making games.

Ever wondered what it’d be like to run your own game development house? Me neither, but don’t let that stop you getting involved with Game Dev Story (iTunes link), a little gem of a game from Japanese developers Kairosoft, currently on sale in the app store for $0.99.

The concept is straightforward – grow your development house from a tiny team of four staff churning out cheap and cheerful PC games to a revered coding powerhouse in swanky offices crafting masterpieces for the latest consoles.

At first you’ll probably be going over budget left right and centre, trying to figure out which game types work best and therefore shift more units, but once you get into the swing of it you can concentrate on hiring and training the best staff and purchasing licences to develop console games, resulting in better made and better selling games with higher profit margins.

It’s not just a question of hiring and firing, coming up with game ideas and watching your staff working their buns off though. Through the use of ‘boosts’ which are periodically made available to purchase as the game progresses (not in-app purchases I hasten to add), you can choose one of your coders to work on enhancing one specific aspect of the game. This pushes up the overall quality of the game you’re making and results in better reviews and sales, adding a further strategic element as you choose the right moment and category in which to use your boosts. At certain points within the development cycle you also get the chance to work on the graphics and sound specifically, either using one of your own staff or hiring in a freelancer, and this too gives you the opportunity to increase the overall quality of your virtual product.

When you make your first million seller it’s a satisfying moment but there’s no time to rest on your laurels. There are always new consoles appearing on the market, contract jobs to take on, new staff to hire and new game types to discover. If you leave too much of a gap between development cycles you start losing fans and therefore a few sales, but think carefully about what kind of games you make – my pirate simulation was a right turkey.

It’s all great fun, but it’s fair to say there are a few things here which need to be addressed by the time Game Dev Story 2 arrives in the app store. I know it’s a tall order on a phone but I couldn’t help thinking how nice it would be if I could play the games my team had made. Even a comedy cut sequence showing some aspects of the latest game would have been good. There are also some hugely expensive advertising options within this game that offer no feedback other than some numbers increasing on a stat page. If I’m sponsoring a racing team I’d like to see my company logo on the side of a formula one car at least!

Finally, the game is perhaps a bit on the easy side. I’m sure if developing a multi million selling game was this straightforward we’d all be at it. Well, maybe not, but it’s easy to make enough money that you don’t have to worry too much about how you spend it, and this negatively impacts the strategy element.

All things considered however, Game Dev Story is great fun. It’s a good natured game and from the cute graphics and retro sound to the amusing titles you can give your creations, it’s a rewarding experience which works perfectly whether in short bursts or longer play sessions. Did I mention that it’s currently only $0.99 on the app store?

Have you noticed that your paychecks have been a bit larger than normal lately? That’s because in 2011, the government is cutting the social security payroll tax paid by individuals from 6.2% to 4.2%.

How much is that in stone cold cash? If your annual income is $40,000, that’s $800 over the course of the year divided among your bi-weekly or monthly paychecks. If you earn $80,000 annually, your extra pocket money is $1,600. For those who make $106,800 or above, you’ll see an extra $2,136. Since social security is taxed individually, married couples could get up to a $4,272 take home pay boost for the year.

Now, what should you do with your extra moolah? Sheryl Garrett, the author of the Personal Finance for Dummies Workbook, a Certified Financial Planner and founder of the Garrett Planning Network, suggests these 10 ways to wisely spend your money, in order of importance for increasing your financial standing for years to come.

Balance Your Budget

If you live paycheck to paycheck, or on a tight budget, the extra $66 per month (if your annual income is $40,000) could mean the difference in paying your electricity bill this month – or not. This month, balance your budget with the fatter paychecks. Next month, adjust your budget so your expenses and income balances when the payroll tax cut expires. Since this bonus money is a one-year deal, don’t rely on it next year to cover basic expenses. Focus on other expense-reduction strategies: negotiate your next lease, use coupons at restaurants, ditch buying grocery items that are spoiling in your fridge, or change your IRS withholding if you get a refund every year.

Settle old debts

“Wouldn’t it be nice to pay off your mom and dad for the money they lent you for an apartment deposit?” says Garrett. Use this money to pay off any money you borrowed from family or friends.

Pay Off Credit Cards (and keep them that way)

Credit cards are easiest to attack, since you see the bill each month. If you use Mint.com, you can set up a goal to pay down your credit-card debt, and Mint will prepare a customized plan for you based on your cards’ balances and interest rates.

Boost Your 401(k) Contributions

If you’re currently not taking advantage of the full amount your employer will match on your 401(k), use your extra cash here. Once you’ve fulfilled this amount, deposit any remaining funds in a Roth IRA.

Contribute to a Roth IRA

Unless your adjusted gross income is higher than $122,000 if you’re single, or $179,000 if you’re married, filing jointly, you are eligible to contribute up to $5,000 in a Roth IRA. (The contribution limit is $6,000 if you’re 50 or older.) If you haven’t already made that contribution for 2010, you have until April 18, 2011, to do so. You can also, of course, contribute another $5,000 for 2011. While the amount you contribute is not tax deductible, you’ll reap the benefits once you start making withdrawals: all your withdrawals, earnings included, are completely tax-free as long as you’ve held them for at least five years. (And, of course, you need to be 59 ½ or older to make penalty-free contributions.)

Buy Yourself Marketable Skills

Enhance your ability to earn money in any of a number ways. If you’re actively looking for a job, consider hiring a resume service to help polish your resume. If you’ve been thinking of going back to school, take your GRE or GMAT test. Take a continuing education course. Buy a snazzy suit for interviews. The key is to spend cash in a way that will boost your income, now or in the near future.

Invest in Your Health

If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to improve your health, now is the time to see a nutritionist. If you’re a smoker, join a stop smoking program. Buy a bicycle to save on gas, or caulk your windows or insulate home. With every investment, think: will this save me money next year by doing this action?

Shop for Organization Tools

Luckily, Mint.com and basic tax software is free, but consider upgrading to the non-free version if you have a home business or more complicated tax forms. If your important documents are scattered across the house, buy a file cabinet or an expandable file organizer. The better organized you are, the easier it will be to manage your money.

Take a Vacay

If you already have all these categories covered, take a vacation. A yoga retreat, cruise or weekend with your honey at a B&B may be just what you need to return home and spend quality time tweaking your budget to perfection.

why internet marketing

With Google worth more than $200 billion based on nearly $29 billion in revenue last year, and Facebook worth $50 to $70 billion based on less then $2 billion in revenue last, it’s easy to call Facebook’s current valuation hype. Why then would so many investors be willing to purchase a stake in Facebook for so much? We take a look.

The Global Advertising Business

While it’s hard to find hard numbers on the total global advertising market, one report we found from 2009 pegged global ad spending at more than $440 billion. What does this have to do with Facebook and Google? Well, the primary revenue source for both businesses is advertising. One of the best ways to value a business is by analyzing the broad market that is involved in. While Facebook’s Credits business is growing rapidly thanks to the explosion in social games, it still accounts for a small portion of Facebook’s revenue (although it could definitely grow significantly).

While Facebook and Google will most likely never have the majority of all global advertising, this $440 billion figure is a great place to start.

Internet Advertising Growth

The next step is to take a look at internet advertising as a percentage of the total global advertising market. According to the IAB, the total Internet advertising market for the first half of 2010 was approximately $12 billion. If we were to project for the total year, we’d guess that the total Internet advertising market will be around $28 billion as revenue tends to pick up toward the fourth quarter.

That means Internet advertising still only accounts for less than 7 percent of the total global advertising market. Overall, we can make a reasonable prediction that this market will at a minimum double in size as consumers’ attention turns to Internet-powered devices. That would be extremely conservative. If we expect that Internet advertising is going to balloon, as most people in the industry believe, we could make a much more aggressive prediction that Internet advertising could potentially grow to 25 percent of the total advertising market, especially if consumer attention continues to shift in that direction.

That means there’s an additional $80 billion in annual advertising up for grabs on the high end, and an additional $28 billion on the low end.

The Lion’s Share

So who’s playing for that $28 billion? Right now Facebook and Google are the primary competitors in the space, with many other companies, like Twitter, looking to capture large portions of that market. If we were to look into the future and predict that at some point in the next five years, Facebook and Google combined will have 60 percent of that market (not unreasonable considering Google’s revenue is already greater than the entire internet advertising market), and it’s split 50/50, Facebook will be generating $7 billion a year in revenue.

However, if the market is going to grow to the size that we believe, Facebook could bring in $24 billion a year in advertising revenue, a figure which Google basically already has right now.

Marketing Budgets

While the IAB has its own measurement of online advertising, there is a portion of company budgets which falls into “marketing” and both Google and Facebook are also going after those budgets as well. This means there’s easily billions of dollars to be spent on alternative advertising solutions. Take Groupon and LivingSocial, for example. These companies, combined, could easily generate more than $5 billion in revenue this year alone.

As such, we’ll see both Google and Facebook try to get in on the action as the deals market explodes. Facebook has already launched its own deals product, based on Places, and Google has already attempted to acquire Groupon for more than $5 billion. If Facebook can get a piece of these budgets, you could easily see the company adding billions in additional revenue through such sources if successful. For the time being it’s not clear whether or not Facebook Deals will eventually become a new revenue channel on its own; however, we can just about guarantee Facebook will try to get a piece of this explosive market.

With this in mind, I’d say it’s somewhat reasonable to expect at least a few billion in annual revenue through new marketing products for small businesses within the next 5 years. This would bring Facebook up to $27 or $28 billion a year in revenue.

Sizing Things Up

With all this (theoretical) revenue, Facebook actually would have to be worth $200 billion, right? Well, if the market stays the same as it is today (which it of course won’t), Facebook would have a market cap of a little more than $200 billion if valued at a revenue multiple similar to Google’s (similar businesses, similar valuations). That’s awesome! So from the perspective that investors can purchase shares at a $50 billion to $70 billion valuation, and Facebook will have been a great buy!

Can you predict the global market?

Well, if all of the projections which I just laid out are accurate, it actually isn’t that unreasonable. However, there are a lot of things that need to take place in order for these projections to come true. One of those things is that the economy needs to continue to grow for the next five years or more. While things are on the up and up, there’s no guarantee that things will grow quickly. It could take 10 years for the Internet advertising market to grow to the size we projected (instead of five). If that happens, your annual return on a Facebook investment will suddenly be slashed. As such, global market trends will impact your investment.

Is Facebook just hype?

Another perspective is trying to predict where Facebook will be in 10 years. Given that the company has only been around for seven years or so, it’s hard to predict where a company like this will be in a decade. Ultimately, it’s very unlikely that Facebook will just disappear, however it’s definitely something that should be considered. If Facebook fails to perform as expected, and misses projections at any point during the next five to 10 years, Facebook’s valuation would be damaged.

More importantly, if Facebook doesn’t continue to expand or at least maintain its grip on the attention economy (where consumers are spending their time), Facebook’s value to advertisers would drop dramatically and suddenly a large portion of the aggressive market share predicted earlier, will be wiped out.

All things considered

With all of these things taken into consideration, the only remaining component of making the investment is determining what other opportunities you will have to do with that money over the next five years or more. If you think the Internet advertising market is going to definitely grow and that Facebook will simply dominate that market, expecting the company to be worth $100 billion to $200 billion is not completely illogical.

However, if you are conservative, think the market will take five years to double in size and that Facebook will have a smaller fraction of it than expected, other investments would look much more attractive. If you’re a gambler who’s extremely bullish on the Internet advertising business, a Facebook investment really isn’t a horrible bet. Best of all Facebook Credits, or an alternative revenue stream that we don’t know of yet, could prove explosive as the company marches toward 1 billion users.

This means Facebook jaw-dropping valuation of $50 billion (and upwards of $70 billion based on other private transactions), is not that ridiculous as long as Facebook continues to play its cards right, successfully capturing a growing fraction of internet advertising revenue. Keep in mind: All the cards must be played right.

    web internet marketing

Editor’s Note: This guest post was written by Jason Spero, the head of mobile ads for the Americas at Google. Spero joined Google in May 2010 as part of the acquisition of AdMob where he was vice president and general manager of North America responsible for strategy and operations.

Mobile is finally delivering on its promise. All the technology is in place and consumers are engaging in droves, on smartphones in particular. However, many businesses still aren’t hearing the call. Most have not yet meaningfully engaged with mobile consumers and adapted their strategies to capitalize on the mobile opportunity. But, it’s still not too late to be early to mobile. Here are five simple steps that businesses should take —today—to build the foundation of their mobile marketing and commerce strategy.

    1) Create a mobile specific site

Give consumers a great mobile experience when they visit your site on their mobile phone. Considering that over 50% of Americans are going to have a smartphone and there will be an estimated one billion mobile internet users by the end of the year, it’s pretty astounding that only 21% of Google’s large advertisers have mobile-optimized websites.

What’s a mobile specific site? It’s a website that’s been designed specifically for a smartphone: it prioritizes what’s important for a user on the go, it features elements that are easy to see and interact with (instead of minuscule type, or rich media components that may or may not load), and ultimately, it leads to happy users, and customers.

A mobile optimized site isn’t a desktop optimized site. In fact, it may be just the opposite: websites that look great on the desktop may be illegible, or require endless zooming-in, or may not work at all on mobile. The mobile web is not a smaller, portable version of the desktop web. When designing a mobile site, put yourself in your customer’s shoes. Make site navigation easier, put key action-items front and center, and build for the on-the-go user. Think about the mobile behavior of your customers and design for it.

    2) Think Local

It’s often said that mobile searches have more ‘intent’; but what does that mean? It’s a fancy way of saying that when people are looking for information on a mobile device they intend to act on it. Fast. For example, when you search for a restaurant on mobile, you’re probably hungry and want to grab a bite to eat somewhere close by. Or, if you’re trying to track down a boutique’s address at 2pm on Saturday, it’s more likely that you’ll visit the boutique and return the shirt that doesn’t fit than it would be if you searched for the same boutique at 11am on Monday morning from your desk at work. Mobile users search for information because they want to take action. After looking up a local business on their smart phone, 61% of users have called the business and 59% have visited .

Because of this increased intent, location is exceptionally relevant to mobile users, and should be especially important to marketers as well. If users intend to act quickly on the information they find on mobile, they’re more likely to take action somewhere near their locations. As a business, if you’re trying to reach a mobile consumer, understanding geo-targeted advertising campaigns and products is critical.

    3) Get ‘Personal’

200 million videos are viewed every day on Mobile YouTube, an increase of over 3x from last year. 65 million minutes (over 125 years!) of Angry Birds games are played every day on mobile. We’re glued to our mobile devices, and engaged like we’ve never been before. There’s an opportunity to connect with consumers in ways that are both special, and only possible, because they’re on mobile.

Here’s an example. Not long ago, Adidas ran a campaign called ‘Basketball is a Brotherhood’. The goal was to enable players to connect with the brand, and each other, in a unique way. To accomplish this, they built out a mobile property that enabled high school basketball players to trade voicemails with Adidas-sponsored basketball pro players. Users could visit the mobile site, call their favorite pro, and maybe even get a call back, all from their mobile device.

Sure, Adidas’ campaign was mobile-specific. But, it was also mobile-special; Adidas wasn’t just taking advantage of the unique capabilities of a platform, they were also enabling a connection that can only happen when a high schooler with Kevin Garnett’s poster on his wall gets a voicemail from their favorite NBA Power Forward. These types of connections represent the promise of mobile

    4) Track your mobile site separately

The web not only looks and feels different on a mobile device, but people engage with it differently, at different moments of the day, and often with different objectives. Google sees a 50% spike in usage on weekends for Google Maps for mobile and in general, mobile engagement increases in the evenings and on weekends, when people are away from their desks, or on the go.

Mobile is distinct from desktop; your mobile site tracking should be distinct as well. When you separate your desktop and mobile website data, you’ll better understand the users visiting your site, what phones they have, and what actions they are taking. You can then use this data to optimize your website and improve it, along with your campaigns.

Moreover, think about how you might be able reach a mobile-specific audience and consumer as well. For example, as people are able to make and adjust travel plans on-the-go from their mobile devices, they are increasingly booking travel arrangements on a much shorter timeline, and sometimes even after they’ve arrived at a destination. Anyone with a mobile device that’s gotten stuck in miserable traffic, or needed to shuffle a schedule to accommodate a client, or just needed an extra day or two on the beach, probably understands this. Mobile is transforming the travel business, and others too; think about how mobile is changing your business, and build campaigns that will enable you to reach these new consumers.

    5) Iterate, Iterate, Iterate

We’re in the earliest chapters of mobile’s history – change is in the air and hopefully will be for a long time. Remember, before January 2007, the iPhone didn’t yet exist, and neither did Android handsets, or any app marketplaces. The rate of change in mobile over the last five years is astounding and you need to have a fast development cycle to stay ahead of that change.

The tactics and strategies that work today may be very different from what works months, or even weeks, from now. Make sure to iterate regularly on your site, your mobile apps, and campaigns. Test to see what works and learn from actual usage. You should be excited to dive-in to mobile, and be prepared to continue working on your mobile ads, websites, and apps.

Soon after, so did cellphones across Egypt, and then the Internet, as authorities cut communication in a last-ditch effort to halt the protests gripping the country.

The only trace the caller left was in cyberspace, where he had delivered a haunting message via Twitter: “Pray for #Egypt.”

Three days later in Washington, D.C., Nadine Wahab, an Egyptian émigré and media-relations professional, sat staring at her computer, hoping rumors of the caller’s disappearance weren’t true.

Suddenly his screen name flashed to life. She stared at the message.

“Admin 1 is missing,” it said. “This is Admin 2.”

Admin 1 was the caller, the anonymous administrator of a Facebook page that had played a crucial role in inspiring the uprising in Cairo. He had left Wahab with a contingency plan. If he disappeared, Wahab should wait until Feb. 8, two weeks from the date of the first protest, before she revealed his identity and sounded the alarm. At all costs, she was to maintain the appearance of normalcy on the page.

The contingency plan had made no mention of an Admin 2, and Wahab worried that the message might be a trap.

For the next week, Wahab and her small cadre of online associates became immersed in what seemed like a shadowy cyberthriller. At its center was a bespectacled techie named Wael Ghonim, a 30-year-old father of two, and Google’s head of marketing in the Middle East.

“My purpose,” wrote Wael Ghonim, “is to increase the bond between the people and the group through my unknown personality. This way we create an army of volunteers.”

Months of online correspondence between Ghonim and Wahab, parts of which were provided to Newsweek, as well as telephone and online conversations with the magazine, reveal a man who adopted a dead man’s identity to push for democracy, taking on a secret life that nearly consumed him.

Ghonim had received a master’s degree in marketing and finance from American University in Cairo and began working for Google in late 2008. In little more than a year, he was promoted to head of marketing for the Middle East and North Africa, a position based in Dubai, where he and his family moved into a house in one of the city’s affluent suburbs.

Ghonim and Wahab met electronically last spring, after Ghonim volunteered to run the Facebook fan page of Mohamed ElBaradei, the Egyptian Nobel Prize winner who had emerged as a key opposition leader; Wahab offered to help with PR. Ghonim had a strong tech background, having already founded several successful Web ventures. But it was his marketing skills that would fuel his transformation into Egypt’s most important cyberactivist.

Under Ghonim, ElBaradei’s page, which promoted democratic reform, grew rapidly. He surveyed its fans for input, pushing ideas like crowdsourced video Q&As. “Voting is the right way to represent people in a democratic way,” he wrote Wahab in May. “We use it even inside Google internally. Even when our CEO is live, if someone posts a tough question and others vote, he must answer it.”

    Making Money From the Internet

From the Media Decoder blog at the New York Times on Saturday:

On Thursday, NBC’s news division staged an elaborate presentation for advertisers, seeking to sell commercial time in NBC’s news programs over the next year. All the members of MSNBC’s prime-time lineup spoke at the lunch with one exception: Keith Olbermann, the network’s biggest star.

For the last several weeks, Mr. Olbermann and the network have been in negotiations to end his successful run on MSNBC, according to executives involved in the talks who requested anonymity because the talks were confidential. ... Friday’s separation agreement between MSNBC and Mr. Olbermann includes restrictions on when he can next lead a television show and when he can give interviews about the decision to end his association with the news channel.

The executives involved in the discussions confirmed that the deal carries limitations for Mr. Olbermann in terms of when he can next work on television, though he will be able to take a job in radio or on any forum on the Internet. The deal also prohibits the host from commenting publicly on the deal, the executives confirmed. ... None of the executives who discussed the deal would reveal the exact length of the restrictions.
The article quotes free-speech law professor Marvin Ammori as questioning the move and saying via email that "Comcast’s shakedown of NBC has just begun."

Comcast denies any involvement and says it has pledged "not interfere with NBC Universal’s news operations."

So, who you gonna believe — your lying eyes? Or that nice cable provider you send all that money to?

    GP

NOTE FROM JOHN: Sure, the exit was planned weeks ago - that's why Keith said Friday night that he was told Friday would be his last show (and making it sound like he was JUST told), and that's why Keith didn't even tell anyone he was leaving until his last show was on the air. None of this sounds like a deal that was worked out weeks ago. Though, note the quote: weeks in the making. You could argue it was months or years in the making, if you want to talk about souring relationships.

And yes, the restrictions on when Olbermann can next go on the air are sickening. I suspect, and hope, NBC/Comcast paid Olbermann millions to keep him off the air. But as consumers, and politically aware Americans, it's disturbing as hell that NBC and Comcast just required one of the top voices of the left, if not its top voice on television, to STFU for the foreseeable future. It only makes the move by NBC and Comcast look all the more political, and worse, partisan.

    Sex Offender Blockbusting

Steve Randy Waldmann conveys an interesting money-making possibility from Scott Wentland:

Still, for all the finance and economics I encountered at the conference, Wentland is the only person whose work suggested a way to actually turn a profit. Wentland presented a paper at the conference. I missed the presentation, but read the paper after the fact. It is empirical work very nicely done, and it tweaked the antennae of my inner, amoral arbitrageur. I now think of registered sex offenders as roving Groupons for home flippers. Wentland and his coauthors provide strong evidence that you could make a lot of money persuading an ex-cellmate to move near a nice, four bedroom home in rural Virginia, and then to move away after you’ve bought the home.

Maybe when the real estate market picks up again people will start doing this. Indeed, I sort of hope they do since my impression is that these sex offender databases should probably be done away with and screwing with people’s real estate value seems like the most likely way to make that happen.

    ~snip~

I don’t know about any of you, but after sex offender and murderer, progressive is on my list of who I don’t want to live next door to. And there is a database that has these records, it’s called voter rolls. I say we release those so we can make educated choices as to where we live.

Can You Make Money On The Internet?

You've seen the ads all over the Internet about how you too can be making money right now On-line and you just can't help wondering if there is any truth to it.

The simple answer is yes, but there is a caveat or two or a thousand that you need to know before you start spending any money on the expert or "guru" advertising his/her latest 'road to riches' scheme.

The truth is that there is a lot of money to be made on the Internet and there are folks who make their living, and a good living at that, on the Internet but there is something that you need to know. No matter what you have been told or what you have heard, making money on the Internet is hard work.

Let me repeat that, making money on-line is hard work and it is not uncommon for the true Internet marketers to spend eight, ten, twelve or more hours on-line working hard to make that money.

So if your question is whether you can make money on-line then the answer is yes but please don't think for one second that you're going to set up one website, submit it to Google and a week later you'll be lying on a beach drinking a fruity rum based drink. That is not going to happen and I don't care who says what to the contrary.

For example, if you are reading this article then you are helping me earn a couple of cents and with any luck a few million of your closest friends will find this article enticing enough to read it. Each one of them will maybe help me earn a typical days wages two cents at a time.

What you need to keep in mind is that this article didn't write itself. There is a real life human being who had to sit down, think of a subject to write about and then start the actual writing. Then there are revisions and corrections to make which combined can easily eat up an hour or two (if you're a pro at writing articles) and even then there is no assurance that any On-line content company such as Associated Content will want to use my article.

It's the same thing with all forms of Internet marketing and until you start making enough money to start outsourcing some of your work then that beach and rum based drink are a long way off.

So lets look at some of the ways that people do make money on-line and at the end of this article I'll tell you what the easiest way of making money on-line is and it's something that you can start doing right now.

As you've already guessed, among other things, I'm a freelance writer. Whether I'm a good writer or not is debatable but that is one of the ways that I make some portion of money on the Internet.

As I already said, I have to think of a subject to write about, I have to sit down and write my article in such a way so as to hold the attention of my potential readers and I have to hope that some on-line content company or blog will be willing to either buy the article from me or pay me residuals based on how many people read or click on my article.

There are people out there that try to use nefarious means to rewrite or "spin" existing articles and then try and pass them off as new or fresh content but honestly those folks don't get very far and those that manage to do a good job of "spinning" existing articles spend at least as much effort on their task as I don on writing one original article. So I do not recommend the nefarious method. I do however recommend article writing if you enjoy writing. It might not make you rich but it can be very fulfilling.

Next we have affiliate marketing and in essence affiliate marketing sounds like a no-brainier. Sign up with some big companies that have popular products, set up a website and start placing that companies ads all over your site then wait for the money to start rolling in.

Sorry, it doesn't work that way and if that is your idea of affiliate marketing then perhaps it isn't for you.

The truth is that in order to do affiliate marketing you need a website that gets a lot of traffic to it. Nobody is going to go to a website that only displays a couple of banner ads and little else. You need to create or generate content for your website that is interesting enough to the average Internet user so that he or she will want to visit your website again and again. Hopefully, during one of those visits that person will notice and click and buy one of the products that you are marketing for that company.

So there you are again, you're either writing articles for, this time, your own website with the hopes that you can entice folks to come to your website to read what you have to say. You don't have to be restricted to writing, you can do videos or you can post your photo's or share recipes or whatever. The point is that you have to work hard to create content for your website in order to have the traffic that may potentially click on your banner ads.

Oh, then you have to worry about getting a good placement on Google and other search engines. That's a full time job in itself and not something I even want to attempt to touch upon for the purposes of this article.

Lets say that you are ranking well on the search engines, you still have to find other websites to exchange links with in order to stay in good favor with those same search engines. How can people come to your site if they can't easily find you.

There are multitudes of ways to make money on the Internet but the description above pretty much covers a majority of them. Whether you set up a website to sell your own products or to display your affiliates ads, you have to work at it to get the traffic to your website.

Some less scrupulous marketers try and take shortcuts to acquiring traffic by spamming thousands or millions of emails but there are laws against that and even if you were to take precautions, no I'm not going to tell you how to take precautions, you still run a huge risk of being hauled into court. Best case scenario is that you'll get fined and worst case scenario is that you'll go to jail for an extended vacation.

I highly recommend not even considering spamming as any small gains it may get you will be dwarfed by the fines and penalties which will eventually catch up to you.

Now there are literally hundreds of niche's that can make you money. In fact, there are so many niche's that I would know where to start listing them all.

I did say at the start of this article that I would tell you what the "easiest" way to make money on the Internet was. Well, it's something that has been around for a while and I'm sure you've heard of it. eBay is the answer, there are plenty of people making a very good living on eBay every day, day in and day out, 365 days per year.

I'm not advertising for eBay mind you, and you should be aware that it isn't exactly easy running an eBay based business either. Yet whether you sell things you have around the house and just don't need any longer or you actively seek out products to sell it's still work and it's by no means a 'quick buck' but it's something you can start doing right now. You may even discover that you enjoy having a part-time eBay business.

I don't want to turn anyone off to the idea of making money or even a living on the Internet, it's possible and many people do it.

The purpose of this article is rather to tell you honestly what it's like to be an Internet marketer of any type. It's hard work, it can mean long hours and it can seem like you just can't seem to get ahead.

No matter what you decide to do here is my advice to you. Don't buy any 'Make Money On-line" programs or classes. They are only in the business of selling dreams that they know you'll never reach with their systems.

By all means use Google and seek out information on On-line marketing. Find some message boards where other marketers discuss many different aspects including strategy. You'll learn more from these forums then you'll ever learn from any "Guru".

Don't be discouraged, you can make money On-line and it doesn't have to cost you a single red cent to start. Get a free blog, or free website. Sign up with an Affiliate and start trying different things to attempt to get traffic to your site.

Remember, you can test the waters of On-line marketing entirely for free and you can certainly practice building a converting traffic stream for your website entirely for free.

Here's a hint, set up a MySpace page and sign up for as many social-bookmarking sites that you can and keep submitting every new page and every change to your website to these social Web 2.0 sites.

Use the blog feature built into MySpace to post new and up to date information about your website, what it's about, what has changed, what content you've added, etc. etc. etc.

So the truth is if anyone is promising you a "Rose Garden" then they are selling you a bunk because if it were all that easy everyone would be On-line doing all forms of marketing. There is no such thing as 'Easy Money' so put those thoughts out of your head right now.

THIS PART IS IMPORTANT: Whatever you do, don't ever buy a pre-made, 'turnkey', ready to earn thousands of dollars, websites. This trick is as old as the Internet and the site you end up buying won't earn you a dime unless you know how to modify it heavily and if even then it's still not likely. You'll have problems with technical support from the company you bought your site from and it will turn into a very expensive lesson, that frankly, I don't think you want to experience as it will likely cost you between $1500-$10,000 easily.

However, if you want to make some money right away then I still recommend selling some stuff you no longer need on eBay. If for no other reason then to get a taste for how everything works. Who knows, someone might pay you handsomely for those golf-clubs you haven't touched in two years.

What makes eBay such a good choice in my opinion? Well, the thing that eBay has plenty of already is traffic of people. These people are already actively looking to buy something and based on the quantity of people that use eBay every day, you are very likely to successfully auction off whatever you're wanting to sell.
